gzip and speed

Im happy with my install of 3 of your components, polls, survey, and answers. But I am using a rockettheme template and several other heavy components.
It seems that enabling any zip files destroys all css of your components, so in order to prevent that, of course I must not enable zip.
Well, now that my site is live, I have been analyzing it, and trying to optimize it for better speed. I have several things that are unrelated to corejoomla, to fix, but zip is part of my issues.

Is there anything that you can suggest to assist in solving, or partially helping this problem?
