Category List Problems/Current Category Display

A couple of issues with the category list:

1. The 'display category list on home page' option only seems to display the category list on the home page. What if I want it on all pages?
2. When a user selects/filters by category, there is nothing to tell the user which category has been selected. There needs to be a way to indicate to the user that they are viewing filtered posts and not all posts

Any suggestions?
